A New York Arts Legacy

The Story Behind the School of Performing Arts

Established in New York City in 1948, the School of Performing Arts offered young performers focused training for professional careers in dance, drama, and music while they completed their academic studies. The school became one of the defining institutions in the city’s long tradition of public arts education.

In 1961, Performing Arts and the High School of Music & Art became one organization in anticipation of a future consolidation. In 1984, the two legacy schools began the academic year together in the new Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School facility near Lincoln Center. This publication follows that history, the people who lived it, and the creative disciplines that shaped the school’s identity.
